Hello,

I have a content site which is completly static.
I would like to add a search functionality for my site as the site has a lot of content in the form of articles.

what is the best way to go about adding a very good search functionality?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Cheers

Atomz is pretty good and free for up to about 500 pages or so. They spider your site and you can customize SERPs quite a bit.

Thanks bill for the suggestion.

I don't mind installing any good software on my hosting server for my site.
I want to have complete control over that application along with complete customisation of SERPs possibility to match my site design.

I currently have around 500 pages and that will sure increase to any extent as i add more articles.
And i personally prefer a PHP and Mysql coded search script/application.
Thanks for further suggestions.

Cheers

I'm working on somehting, I'll let you know as soon as I get those darn memory leaks snuffed ;)

In the mean time there is a bunch of free site searches, which work well enough, but most stamp advertising on the results... freefind is one I've used in the past, they let you completely design the serp page, but not the serps themselves...

You could also try the custom google search if your content doesn'T change often and is well indexed.

If you want some free software, and don't mind configuring around until it fits your needs, I'd recommend ht://dig [htdig.org].

I'd also recommend you look at fluid dynamics from xav.com.

Easy to customise, has its own spider, and various lisencing types - freeware (slightly limited, for only one site, might well do for you though) and shareware ($40 I think).

I have it running on a site with a little over 1000 pages (some dynamic) and it works very nicely. Good support too on the forums.

I'd agree with Bill, Atomz is excellent and free!

I looked at ht://dig and found the installation and configuration a bit daunting for the likes of me. Went with FDSE and the auto install was a blessing. Use it on a 1,500 page site that's continually updated and have had no problems. Usually returns the page I think it should in the top three positions.

Thank you for all your inputs!

Killroy :

custom google search

Could you help me with a link to that kind of Google's service. BTW do they charge for that?
Also, kindly let me know, once you are ready with the search app you are working on.

I've tried xav freeware sometime back, not sure about ht//dig though. I didn't like the xav thingy.

I was just searching around and found a couple of interesting apps. One being opensource phpmysearch sounds very interesting. Anyone used them? have any feedback on that script?

Thank you again.

Cheers
