Web site major restructuring

What's the best way to preserve existing links?

Hi
I'm about to do a major overhaul of a clients website and completely restructure it. Problem is there are incoming links to existing pages.
What I want to do is put redirects on these pages without effectivley losing the link value.
What's the best way to go about this - maybe not using redirects and having a page has moved link.

Suggestions appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Chris

Can you keep them as static 'doorway pages'?

I think that 301 redirects preserve the value of Google links.

Hmm ...

I just did a links:my.site.com/newname.html and got the internal links to that page, while a links:my.site.com/oldname.html showed me the external links (which have not migrated). So Google does keep them separate at some level. But I have often heard that they still count.

Thanks for the advice I'll give the 301 a try.
