I recently set up my first Bulletin Board and was playing around w/ the dissallow username feature. I have restricted some words but was hoping to get a bit of discussion about words that are good to block early..... And why?

cheers.

Hi hzane,

I have recently built a bit of online software where people sign in and get a username. I unfortunaltey never banned any words, meaning i now have to monitor the usernames of our users........all 10,000 of them!

I have found though that only a small portion of those actually deliberatly use bad words with the intention to offend.

Others may use bad words, not meaning any harm, and others might just use words that they didn't know were bad.

Words, from experience that you should try and ban straight away would be all your f**k words i.e f**king, f**ker etc, as well as all of the different names avaialble to describe the male/female organs. Some of these are not actually bad.....its how they can be used that is bad.

Hope this is a start for you.

Ban anything with "admin" or "moderator" in the title if your boards arent moderated 24/7!

Got to admit ive abused that oversight in the past! ;) Didnt make the same mistake with my own forum...

Also, you may want disallow anything with your domain name in it (depends on your domain tho).

If you can use wildcards (you should), ban stuff like *admin* *[bad word]*

Also, try to cover stuff like alternate spellings (p0rn, etc...) 3=e 0=o 1=i $=s and so on.
