Advertising to local residents online?

how to reach local Dallas residents online

I need to advertise a new service to local Dallas/Fort Worth residents online. Off the top of my head I figure that if I can find any other local company/group/assocation etc. that has an online community, etc. I could try to advertise with them. But I'm new to this and not sure how else to proceed. There are millions of people who live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and if they are online I want to reach them. Does anyone have any experience with reaching a local market online, or have any suggestions for me on how to go about doing this? Thanks!

My experience (in small towns and regions) is that locals rarely search on their own towns, with the possible exception of using the web as a quick alternative to using the phone book.

Sorry for the confusion - I wasn't referring to reaching these people via the Search Engines. I was thinking of more pro-active approaches i.e. try to figure out what sites they would logically be frequently, and then advertising on those sites, etc. Is this not a good way to go?

citysearch.com has a Dallas section but I think they partner with guidelive.com for Fort Worth.

Belo has two major media outlets in Dallas - the Dallas Morning News (dallasnews.com) and WFAA-TV (wfaa.com). Similar content but different sites. Those would be a good start. I'm not sure who else are the major media players in that market - try searching for Dallas newspapers, Radio, and TV stations.

You may be interested in geo-targeting people through yahoo mails ads. They run 6CPM($6 per 1000 impressions) but you can target these like mad: city/state/zip, age, gender, interests, etc.

They are pretty neat, but a little pricey. If you use yahoo mail these are the ads that are shown after you send a message or log out. They are called "monster ads" since they are a large size.

Worth looking into IMHO.
