Story here:

Wired News's account [wireservice.wired.com]

The board of AOL Time Warner <AOL.N> on Thursday voted to remove AOL from its name, a sign of the decline of the company's online unit and the failure of its attempt to unite old and new media.

It brings to question the future of AOL altogether and the cascading effect that could have.

I thought that was exciting news as well. So much for "New Media". The much hyped synergy between movies,TV,music, and internet hasn't happened at all.

The only synergy between the internet and music has resulted in lawsuits against 70 year olds and 12 year olds.

I'm not sure AOL will go away, 30+ million customers is no small potatoes, and for the mom and pop internet user, all they know is AOL.

My understanding is that AOL is losing subscribers as those "mom and pop internet users" are switching to cheeper alternatives.
