That can be seen pretty clearly in the YouTube vs Google graphs as mentioned above. And you can also see that in the top sites, where the myplace/youtube type sites take up 2/3 of the top 10.
If you are shooting for info or data about the under-30 net skimming surfers then there might be something useful in it for you.
But when it tells me that yahoo.com is 3x as popular as Google.com it has some issues.
note that nobody has successfully spammed their way to number 1.
No, but I have seen sites get spammed into the top 500. And if it can be done for 500, that does not say much for it's accuracy.
If I just want to check trends, there are better ways, such as Analytics or [google.com...]

However, I have found a use for Alexa...
Alexa is useful in determining when a site makes a big deal of it to their users or has a large discussion about it. That can be seen quite easily in a spike in a site's ranking followed by the standard slow erosion of that ranking. Here's a great example...
