Hi i have a question about how some 'asp' (Application Service Provider) websites and other websites generate income when they are do not have a paid subscription service.

For example some sites like the use of polls that you can embed into your own website and all of the administration of the poll is contained within the site itself. I do not see any ads on their site or on their polls but they must be generating an income somehow.

I ask this because i have recently built a similar 'polling' application that i would like to offer commercially but only if i can make money doing it. I obviously can't offer a paid subscription service because there are too many 'free' services out there. I just want to know what their alternate revenue stream is.

I'm good on the technical side of things but the business side i am lost! :)

Welcome to WebmasterWorld

I'm not sure I have the answer as income could be generated in many ways. These include subscriptions, rental, sponsorship, etc. It could also be a loss leader.

Some other folks may have additional ideas.

Hi i have a question about how some 'asp' (Application Service Provider) websites and other websites generate income when they are do not have a paid subscription service.

Many businesses would rather pay for a service/application than get a free one. They do so with the thoughts that free services are hastily produced, not supported, and not maintained over time. When they pay for applications (such as polls), they expect them to be better quality and accompanied by support.

Outside of that, many websites generate income from advertisements - either through direct advertising, or PPC (pay per click).
