Hi

I am running a portal about one specific type of music. However, I'd like to make a section "classic track of the week" or something like that... There would be one classic track listed, and I was thinking to provide mp3 low quality sample of that song. Am I allowed to do that?

* I am providing just a part of the song in low quality
* I am not selling the song

Thanks in advance

Reproducing a copyrighted work in whole or part for any reason without specific consent of the copyright owner is indeed a violation of copyright laws.

However, people do it every day. Roll the dice as you see fit. :-) Though you may "see" is as not for profit, if your website makes any money at all, you are using a copyrighted work to promote your business - and that is an opportunity for the copyright holder to get a piece.

It's not all that difficult to procure permission. We did precisely this for a video we put on our site, just a sample of dancing set to a particular music. The recording company approved it and said we'd see a bill for $100 for administrative purposes - we still haven't seen any invoice. I think just asking was enough.

But I see no one else doing this.
