Google has 300 of my pages indexed, but only 2 show up when.

When I do site:www.example.com for my site in google, it only lists 2 pages! At the bottom, however, it has a link that says something along the likes of "do the search again with omitted results." When I click this, it has all the 300 pages!

Why is this happening and how do I fix it?

Same here, it's been like that for me since about Jan 15th. However Google referrals and the regular search are unaffected, it's just the site command that is affected. Someone else reported the same thing.

If you check it everyday or so you'll see it will change, displaying 1-2 of 3 pages, displaying 1-4 of 900 pages, displaying 1-4 of 10 pages etc. Somethings broke but if you do a regular search your pages should be returned in the SERP's.

Could it be that I am displaying the same META description on all my pages and that makes Google think all my pages are the same? Is this a bad practice to do so?

You should use different titles and descriptions in all your pages. I've seen it suggested that if you can't provide a unique description don't use one.

However in my case all my pages have unique titles and descriptions so I don't think that's the problem. Google is simply "broke" ... I don't think there is anything you can do about it but I'm no expert, just telling you what I know. As I commented above this hasn't affected traffic on my site, it actually increased briefly but overall it's been steady.
