Do you think it would work as a way of co-owning a website if one controls the domain name and the other controls the hosting account?

Which one would be in a better position if the partnership would break up?

There's a marriage destined for disaster!

Do it right- make a formal partnership and have the partnership own both.

Haven't I seen you on a certain other board :?

Well, yes it would mean that the site depended entirely on trust and good will between the two.

But youīre a buissness owner, isnīt it expensive to make a formal agreement with lawyers and all, what if they live on different continents?

Well lets put it this way.

If you get a choice of either the domain or the hosting.
Get the domain. Your name as the Registrant.
For Sure!

Long the same line as this thread. Two years ago almost went in
partnership on a auto/directory affiliate site. We register the
domain name together. He was going to host the site on his server.
Of the two of us he was more tech savy and could of handle any
server problems better than I. We never did the deal, but I
always wonder what would of happen if we had a falling out. How
would I get all the data off his server if he wasn't willing to let
me have it? Anybody ever been down this road?

Should we of went to a neutral hosting server?

Not compared to the cost of having to get lawyers on 2 continents involved AFTER the fallout.

It's much better to have each person's position agreed to by each other from the get-go. That way everyone knows what to expect and what is expected of them by the rest. As soon as even one person has the "that's not what I thought we were agreeing to" moment, things are going to go downhill rapidly.

Yah, Iīm beginning to think it would be better if each had their own site and then traded work instead, simpler all around.
