1) Sell something directly (instead of relying on affiliate programs)
2) Advertising (of course you need a site with traffic...)
3) running other companies' PPC campaigns
4) domain name speculation

Lots of others.

Think of it more in terms of what do you have to offer that someone may want?

We've seen it all before, if all someone wants is to make money it's obvious. Worthless pages crammed with 5 or 6 adSense units, email marketing, and pages where someone is selling something they are clueless about and have no passion for.

There are a million ways to "make money on the Internet." Inherently the whole concept is about information exchange. Have you got "information" someone would pay for? Something no one else has? This can be as varied as pics of J-lo poolside or a new way to discover your navel's place in the universe. But here is what will set you apart: what you know that is different than the other 100K websites doing the same thing.

If you don't get the gist of these ideas, find something you know a great deal about, a product of some sort, and sell it. :-)

the information thing is a good point.

im good at and also enjoy coding and databases, perhaps I could purchase a large set of data and present it to people in a useful way.

i definitely want to do something worthwhile, not just spam my way to a quick buck. I already do very well out of affiliate stuff but im just selling something for someone else, ideally I want my own product or service.

i love web design but everyone does it and it does not pay enough (ever met a rich web designer?) and most customers expect too much.

other ideas

5) write content for others
6) build turnkey sites and sell them
7) website flipping (buy old and dilapidated sites with problems but potential, improve them and sell them)

im good at and also enjoy coding and databases . . .

Me too. And getting better as the years roll by, which is important.

Take what you know technically and turn it into a labor of love for other things in life that are important to you. It's the same thing as they teach you in creative writing: write what you know. Take your technical knowledge and apply it to what you're passionate about. You can't lose. :-)
