"The bill, dubbed the Safety Act by sponsor Lamar Smith, a republican congressman from Texas, would impose fines and a prison term of one year on ISPs which failed to keep full records.

Big Brother here we come... This sounds like an enforcement nightmare combined with a ton of privacy problems to boot. Plus, the smart cyber-criminals will not be the ones caught by this. IM, email and website traffic can all be encrypted and/or obfuscated. What a waste of resources...
