We are having a discussion in the office about the old search engines, back in 2000/01 and there used to be a search engine that used to rank by popularity.

Does anyone remember what it was called or have a list of SE back then.

Yep, that's right, it is DirectHit [web.archive.org]
It was a search engine measuring click popularity. It's now part of Teoma, Ask, IAC Search & Media group.
