I have a somewhat popular website and I have been moving around every year looking for good hosts. I am with a host for 6 months and then I get this high CPU mail. It seems I am expected to use only 1% CPU. So shared hosting was no answer to my hosting needs. But now I am on a VPS and still I got the mail few days back.

They are asking me to move to a semi-dedicated hosting. A semi dedicated account will allow me 5% ... but all these numbers are so host depended and can be tweaked by the host whenever they want me to move to a more expensive plan.

What do you guys do? Do you all go dedicated? Please suggest some good hosts where u can run atleast a wordpress blog ( with caching) and a forum. Around 300K pageviews a month.

thanks!

Dedicated hosting is the only real solution.

I would love to make a free suggestion, but, it is against the TOS of WW.!

So why don't you just seach for dedicated hosting at Google and select the 1st Sponsored result or the second free one :)

They are not a cheap solution, but, they will be hosts to most serious sites in the future.....

They host a large number of MS sites, many other big value names, and me!.....LOL!

I've tried just about every hosing company on the planet.....this is the only one worth dealing with......Can't wait for WW to wake up to that fact so that we can mention them by name again :)

hey percentages .... i guess it would depend where you are searching from.

unless of course the company you mean is trading under two totally different names with different websites and different prices

We use a dedicated server, renting it costs us $99 US a month. It's not the most modern or high-spec machine, but it does the job <g>

Having your own server does give on the freedom to run ANY scripts you like without worrying about the impact upon other customers of the server.

Not really, you can find them easily via free Google or Sponsored results in most parts of the World I've been to....which is just about everywhere :)

They are not hard to find, the problem is whether people are willing to pay the high priced bill....$300+ per month per server!

One ruined Friday night for me made the decision easy...I don't need hassle, I need a company that deals with hassle for me!

If you want to be on-call 24-7-265 to your hosts then pick the cheapest.....if you want a life then pick the guys that know how to do their jobs!

well i'm in the uk searching google.com for dedicated hosting and the first sponsored result and the second free listing are different companies.

i know who you mean though.

in answer to the original poster though, i've just got my first dedicated box a few months ago and it is great ... faster, better and less problematic.

percentages for every person like yourself who are very happy with that company, there are others like myself who were happy for awhile until they experienced problems that lasted nearly a month. I was with them for almost two years and then bang. They are not nearly as competent as people give them credit for IMHO. I do agree with you though and you need to spend decent money to get a decent server and management.

If you want to find out about hosting do a search for web hosting forums where you can research both the good and the bad experiences of hosting companies/datacenters instead of hearing from a few people.

I've been dedicated for about 5 years and it's the only way to go. It's my server and I can install and run whatever I want on it.

A month?.....4 hours I could belive....24 hours would be stretching it......but, a month?

I really don't understand how that could happen? You can talk to their best techs toll-free forever until a problem is resolved. Worst case is a totally new server and their migration program.....still done in 24 hours though? (Usually less than 6 hours).

My contract says 1% downtime = free for the next month....they are certain that will never happen!

All I can say is that I've tried just about all dedicated server providers, heck the ones I like are expensive, and if I could get the same service cheaper I would!

However, their competitors have failed constantly during the last 6 years.....therefore paying the higher price is the best option for me :)
