Question: Would it benefit me to place a text(keyword) link to my home page on the website that holds the number one spot for that keyword? If so Why?

Yes because of Google's PageRank algorithm which ranks sites based on the number, quality and relevance of sites linking to you (as well as the link text itself). [google.com...] Other engines use similar methods. See also: [webmasterworld.com...]
