The Redmond, Wash., company said Monday it is making the "Sender ID Framework" available under its Open Specification Promise program. That means Microsoft will not sue anyone who creates products or services based on the e-mail technology.

The move is part of an effort to promote interoperability among commercial and open-source software products, and among Internet access providers that utilize e-mail authentication, Microsoft said in a statement.

"Users will be able to implement, commercialize and modify Microsoft's patented e-mail authentication technology without having to sign a licensing agreement," it said.

Hi,

I think that this is unalloyed good news.

Well done, MS!

I may prefer and use SPF, but more decent unencumbered options is good.

At first I thought it said "Fee".

Sounds good, but does Sender ID work well? I haven't looked into it.

I never really understood the difference between SPF and Sender ID. They look the same to me for the most part. Does anybody here use Sender ID? Do you use it with SPF? Do you get better performance with one over the other? Anybody use both?

Hi,

There was a lot of talk that Sender ID was a typical M$ embrace-extend-extingish ploy.

Given that MS has not ruled that out, Sender ID can be truely looked at on its technical merits.
