Portal Software combined with Content Management

What can you suggest, what's your experience?

In my day job I head up the e-business group of an industrial area which it not too internet savy (yet).
There is one branch though where a new technology kicks in and the three year young market grows nicely, these folks are online all the time.

We are a supplier to these folks with the #1 performance products and services world wide (we employ 20,000 folks and lead developments in many areas as we spend some 350mio in R&D per year).

Now, the particular industry is not very well covered online (yet) and we as the perceived leaders in develoment of support and products want to establish THE industry-leading portal solution in a phased approach, getting everyone who matters in the value chain on board.

What we need is:
- modular portal solution
- have various contributors to maintain, build content
- combine the tool with Obtree content management tool we use corporate-wide
- add value with additional portlets and interaction areas

Can anyone please provide some experience, notes, ideas that might be supportive to us and the whole board here?
