what to look for?

Hi.

I'm buying a new 17" monitor. I'm not very good at hardware characteristics etc. Eye strain is my main concern so I wanna get a monitor that would not make my eyes tired. I need some advice. What should I look for? Is it the frequency per resolution? For instance I'm probably gonna use 1024/768. I checked out 2 products: a Samsung that has 85 Hz frequency, and a Sony Trinitron with 96 Hz. Obviously the latter costs a bit more ($75 more). But is it worth it? Also, I see some other characteristics such as Vertical and Horizontal frequency. Are these very important also? Please help.

Thanks.
Dan

I just purchased a new flat screen LED monitor. My monthly electric bill dropped $8 as a result. The old CRV tube monitors really ate up the juice, not to mention all the radio waves they emitted causing eye strain.

I chose my new monitor because of the fast "lag" time (or lack of lag time), high pixel resolution, contrast ratio, screen size and price (I purchased the Sharp 19".) Here is a comparison page that may help:

Thanks. LCDs cost too much for me though.

A flat screen CRT is much easier to view without eyestrain. It also costs more, but not quite as much more as an LCD.

I think you'd be quite happy with either of those 2 monitors. Basically the higher the refresh rate the more comfortable it is on the eyes. Don't forget tho that you still need a decent video card to drive that resolution at that refresh rate - that's usually not a problem with today's video cards but I don't know what you have. I'm currently running a Samsung 955DF (19") at 1280x1024 and 75Hz and I find it quite comfortable.

I have the same monitor(17") and am very happy with it. Much better than the cheaper monitor I have at work.

...and a Sony Trinitron with 96 Hz. Obviously the latter costs a bit more ($75 more). But is it worth it?

Although I own several sony products quite often you end up paying for the name(they spend a lot on marketing compared to others and have to make up for it somewhere) rather than a significant difference in quality, so you might want to keep that in mind.

Thanks so much for your replies. You must know what you're talking about so I think I'll get the Samsung.

Also, I should add that both monitors I mentioned have a flat CRT tube.
