Hi Tony,

I prefer black and white easy to understand language and terminology. I'm not sure there is any official standard but ...

A Web Designer is someone who works with clientside code.

A Web Developer is someone who works with serverside code.

A Professional Web Designer is someone who can work with XHTML 1.1, application/xhtml+xml, CSS , tableless layout, and easily meet WAI AAA compliance (view my site for such an example hehe). Most designers don't really meet those level of standards and can be referred to as Web Designer. I don't want to put people down but I see way too many people using the term professional and their pages don't even have a doctype much less validate as XHTML and just forget WAI AAA compliance!

Offhand I would think of a Web Administrator is someone who is in charge (both clientside and serverside code) of a website typically through a contract. They could also be one of several people working on a site but they are the only ones with administrative power.

In addition to that someone who works at a server farm might be considered a Server Technician. They may or may not understand any particular clientside or serverside code but they are physically there in case clients using the servers require service.

From what you posted it seems you are a Web Developer. I can't say I would be comfortable stating what a Professional Web Developer's qualifications would be as I am still learning PHP and haven't effectively learned how to work with MySQL.

I hope this helps!

- John

I prefer PornMaster! Not that I am but It stops thier questions quick.

Everything else just creates more problems.
Such as:
"Web Designer" = Response: O'h thats nice (loser) my 12 yr old niece does that to.
"Publisher" = Response: My uncle got ripped off by phoney clicks, are you involved with that?
"Programer" = Response: O'h, thats nice, my 15 yr old nephew does that. When you moving out of moms basement?
"WebSite Managment" = Reponse: Still unemployed eh?

The above might not be actual verbiage but usually if one is not as familiar to the web as a site owner is, then thats what they are thinking.

  • How 'bout "capable of creating Web pages that load very slowly"?
