How do I know when I am indexed on Google?

Do I search on my URL?

First I apologize if this is the wrong section for this question, but the Search Engine World did not seem to have a section that covered it. If there is a better place to put general questions on Google search please let me know.

I can find my website on Google by doing a search. I actually do pretty good in the ranking when I use general keywords to look for a product like mine.

I was told that just because I find my website on Google does not mean it is indexed. I was told that I need to type the url to my site (not including the www part) and if I get a hit I am indexed. Is this true? If so what is the difference between being "indexed"

I did just try searching on my URL with the www part as suggeted in another message on this forum. I did find my website this time. I can find other sites by dropping the www part and searching but not mine (in fact the one site I tried works both ways with www and w/o www). What is the difference?

BTW webmasterworld.com results in nothing but google does fine www.webmasterworld.com, just like mine.

Relax, you are indexed :)

Being found on a search is even better than finding your URL. People search for products, not for URLs, so you can have your URL in the index, but if you do badly on a product search this will not help you much.

It is not enough to be indexed in Google, it is only useful if you rank well on real searches (which you apparently do).

Thanks Mohamed_E!

I found a wonderful site on gving tips to optimize your site for search engines. It might be against the TOS t post the URL so if anyone is interested PM me. Maybe this site has such a section? I'm fairly new and have not run across it here. If it is not here then it sure would be a great addition.

spinnaker,

I suspect that you are not aware of Brett's excellent article on Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone [webmasterworld.com]. It does not really take 12 months to build a successful site, but the point is that there are no shortcuts, it takes a lot of work.

Yes, I have sen this excellent post. It was added to my "library" a week or so ago. This site I am thinking of goes more into the a pit more detail on proper design of a webpage. Pages that can be easily processed by a search engine etc.
