Setting up SMTP server for ws ftp alerts?

How do you do this?

I bought ws_ftp (which I had used in the past for many years) after a thorough search of FTP clients for various features and what sold me is the ability to email myself an alert after the backup so I know it worked.

Well some of the backups seem to be failing and I can't get the email to send out.

They need an SMTP server. I have a couple ded. servers w/ cpanel, but it won't authenticate w/ WS_FTP. I think ws_ftp doesn't have a sophisticated setup...

How can I set up an smtp server on a windows machine that will hook up w/ ws_ftp? I'm guessing I won't be able to use my yahoo or gmail account?

Any ideas? I spent 2 days researching this and can't figure out how to get it working...

Since many ISPs block port 25, you usually have to send e-mail using the internal mail server (e.g. the ISP's email server). If your ISP widgets.net, it would be mail.widgets.net

I've been using BLAT.exe a dos command line SMTP client. If you scour Usenet, there are usually some script samples that have rudimentary ways to confirm FTP jobs.

You might also look at SyncBack SE. The free version has an FTP backup function with failure notifications via e-mail.

Blat! That name is familiar. I think I used them on a job many years ago, thanks! That should do the trick hopefully.

I tested syncback and it didn't quite work for me. Can't remember why...
