modifying anothers site

anyone got any advice on modifying a website done by someone else. pitfalls things too look out for etc

should i try and get the website rehosted somewhere else so i dont have to go through the original designers, as i am concerned they may say to my customer we can do what they are offering for the same price , just too keep me out

If a potential client is willing to give you that opportunity
It shows that he /she is not really happy with the previous designer
So price does not only matter :)
Your services might suit your client better
In any case I always move (if doable) a site to an ISP I have a VAR account with
They know me, and I know where to place a call
