I generally link the address on contact pages directly to a Mapquest, Y!, or Google map.

Typically we would simply go to the web interface, type in the address, generate the map, and copy the resulting url as the href for our adress link.

Pretty stone age I know, but it is usally just one link on an entire site. I know there are api's I could use, but this seems overkill for just a single link on a site?

It does however gnaw at me as not professional, any comments on this subject appreciated.

I think it is still best to link to one of the map sites. Google for example will make it very easy for user to take it a stage further and locate you by putting their zip/post code in the form and clicking direction to here.

It would involve a lot of pretty complicated software to be able to do something like that locally on your site.

If you just want a simple map then contacting a map producer might be an option ad asking them for permission and costs to use their image.
