dumb-sounding question but do htaccess files work on any server .. or just just linux.

i'm considering a windows server for a particular site but want to make sure htaccess will work first.

It isn't the server's operating system, it is the web server software. .htaccess files are for Apache, which usually runs on a Linux/Unix server but can run on Windows.

By far the most common web server software for Windows is IIS - which does not support .htaccess files. Ask your potential new host whether they run IIS or Apache.
