hello,
i am basically a web designer and need to upgrade my skills so as to to manage a remote website, be able to identity technical problems with webservers (windows & unix) and generally be technically proficient in this subject.
can anybody suggest a good book or tutorial? thanks in advance.

If you want to get into looking after servers I suggest you build your own webserver.

It can be a little daunting but there are plenty of tutorials out there to help you. If you've got an old PC lying around (and it can be really old, if you don't have one you can pick up a second hand system that's capable for about $100) install Red Hat Linux, that comes with Apache (web server).

There's plenty of help out there, on forums like this and in the form of tutorials. I belive this is the best way to learn.
