I've seen several move trailers lately that have a myspace.com/moviename link in them in addition to the 'official' site. In one case I thought that I saw no official movie site, just the myspace link (though I can't remember which movie and thus might be deluded in this). In any case it seems to me that this takes myspace to a whole new level. Obviously millions are invested in movies and by having a myspace link (in addition to or instead of their own web site link) it's not only sending myspace 'free' traffic and new users but boosting their credibility since people are seeing the reference outside of the normal internet tech culture, into the mainstream pop culture of movies.
One question I have is that is the myspace movie presence perhaps more important in some ways than the moviename.com site?
Take the Clerks II myspace site for example myspace.com/clerksII (caution, there's offensive content there).
From that page I can add the movie to my friends, forward it to my friends, subscribe to the blog, post my thoughts (that just might be read by the actors/producers) and in general see all sorts of interesting things about the movie within the familiar myspace infrastructure.
This, I think, is one of the reasons why social networking sites are so popular and becoming increasingly important; they fill the context gap. Taken as a whole the internet is a jumble of all different kinds of sites with no way for the user to relate and connect to each one. But sites like myspace and also ebay provide an underlying context for different entities (people as friends or buyers and sellers) to interrelate.
What will be interesting to see going forwards is how far this goes. Will people stop altogether to register domain names and instead begin paying for myspace.com/mydomainname? Or will the back end software used to develop web sites become more standardized and capable of performing the same functions as myspace in a fundamental way?
