Just a quick question to anyone who feels like giving an answer. I was wondering, on average, how many times per year is your host server down? ie. your site is not loading. Is it once a month, once per week, once per year? I'm trying to get a feel of how good my host is. So far, in the three months I've been with them my site has been down twice. Once for seven hours and now today...for 12 hours so far :( And on my second busiest day in terms of traffic..argh! No Adsense revenue for me today ;) Anyways, I was just curious and might want to consider going with another hosting company....thanks for your thoughts! :)

Dave.

Where they planned outages? If your with a smaller company that is growing alot they may have more planned outages. If both of these times it was not planned and it was down for that amount of time. I would view it as bad. Just my thoughts. My hosts usually reboot the servers often for some reason (they feel its better.)

I would say it is time for a new host. I would have switched after the first outage, unless they had a VERY good reason for the downtime.

I was not informed of any planned outages either time :(

Are you counting planned patches where it needs to be restarted? If so then once a month. If not then never in 2 years, touch wood! Not even during Slammer.

my sites were down for 15 min last week - that's one of only a handful of outages over the last 5 years and none of them have been for more than 30 minutes - most have been 15 min or less.

Good grief...what I'm about to admit is humbling, but you all deserve to know the story! I chatted with billing support...apparently I failed to update my credit card info. Dang, I should have contacted them earlier today! My fault...but that seven hour outage a month back wasn't my fault ;) Thanks guys...next time I won't react so hastily! :)

Mmmm....

One not-really-planned outage <30min per month for updates &c; and about one semi-outage per month due to network issues (I really wish alter dot net would get a clue) which only affect a very small part of the world. In the last year, I've also had one outage for around 16 hours after my host's DNS server caught fire... learned a lot about having the primary and secondary DNS on separate, physically-different machines. :)

Oh, yeah; one 15min outage when the NIC failed. :(

Rackspace has been a very reliable host and I haven't experienced any downtime with them yet :)

12h? That is ridiculous. Totally inappropriate for any hosting company.

I can't tell exactly how often my host is down, but not much, and regularly check it.

I advise you to read some *real* hosting review first before getting a new host.

Like Imaster, I'm with Rackspace UK, and I've never noticed any network downtime whatsoever.

Don't know which Rackspace you are using, the one i am using (For a few servers) is down every now and then, 12 hours in a row, ha no problem for rackspace.

I think in the last year, i would estimate the total downtime, on 3 dedicated servers to be around 70-75 hours for them in total.

Its rackspace.com, the reliable one :)
