best web designers?

Which country comes to mind?

I've browsed through SE lists of web design firms in the UK and elsewhere. I was surprised at the low quality work for top listed sites in the UK. After seeing one of Macromedia's sites of the day recently I am convinced that Australia is at the top of the web design field. I don't mean just design (which is often exceptional) but the entire process of web production and business.

it's very difficult to say what best design is at all. a good designed webpage can even be the one of the gnu [gnu.org].

I don't believe it is country-dependent.
Find a couple of designs you like, look at their author's portfolio. If it looks like what you've been looking for - address that very team. And the country of origin is highly irrelevant in case of on-line business.

I have worked with designers and programmers from very different nationalities and backgrounds. Seems to me it doesn't really have much to do with where your from - more the skills and experience you have aquired.

Australian sites are better than the UK? IMO thats your opinion ;)

Our team has one Italian, a Scot, two Englishmen and a Bangladeshi

We are based in the UK but are from very varied backgrounds and culture. So from my point of the view there isn't much arguemnt for where the best designers are from - some of the best and worst are from the UK and the same could probably be said for Australia/US/India/Federated States of Micronesia etc...
