I was just wondering what the average salaries and perks (bonuses, vacation etc.) are for web designers.

Maybe someone who lives in the North East with a B.S. in Information Technology and 1 year of work experience.

Skills include expert level in HTML, CSS, JavaScript as well as experience in ASP, Perl/CGI scripting.

Take a look at some of the vacancies on jobserve.com.

go on yahoo jobs, *http://uk.careers.yahoo.com/ and click on the salary checker (it will give you the average salary that was advertised fo your chosen job.

Otherwise you've got www.cwjobs.co.uk which also have a salary checker and a lot of vacancies to look at.

I didn't realize there were so many members from UK!

I'm from USA so I'll check the equivalent sites for here.

Thanks.

Buck Consultants does a well-regarded salary survey for web-related jobs either every year or every other year.

It looks like it is in decline - web based jobs in the UK are certainly in a downturn.

A lot of this work is now being farmed out to India (where the quality is high and price is cheap).

Not sure how things stand in the US.

We tried this about 2 years ago price was definitely cheap, quality was not that good. Code worked but wasn't well documented, easy to follow, or efficient. I guess they knew they weren't married to the code so it didn't really matter to them.

Having just found a new job I didn't find this. Things are outsourced to India or wherever, sure, but web designers/developers just have to change. There is now a higher expected experience level requirement for the highly paid jobs. This is in line with other industries. Some of the jobs for Java and VB still have astoundingly high salaries - and anyone who can demonstrate skills in these areas is in the money. It is not enough anymore just to be able to design a good looking site.

Can somebody please post some $$$? In Munich@Germany, we're around €40 for semi-to-pro html/php/etc.

Have a look at swz-hotjobs.salary.com for the US.

I haven't seen salaries decline so much as jobs change (granted, I am in one of the few currently strong US markets)-- new specialties and expert practices seem to command greater resilience to the current economic doldrums. Someone with Hotmetal Pro calling herself a web designer might have commanded $90K in 1997, now her entry-level HTML jockeys may earn only half as much.
