Listing Remove

Legal?

A question posed to me today. If you have a directory say of widget builders in america and one of the companies in your directory asked to be removed for any reason. If you say no you arn't removing the listing are you infringing in any laws?

I don't know about American law, but do they allow Search Engines to index (with or without caching) the site? If not, then they might have a stronger point. And are they also missing in other directories like ODP?

What about changing a link into plain text. Would that help for that company?

To Clarify

Say the listing dosn't have a link to the website or dosn't have a website at all just contact details. If said company requests removal do you have to remove it and what legal implications are involved?

No names, direct telephone lines, personalized email addresses, just:

company name,
address,
telephone#/fax#
etc.

Not sure if you would be infringing on any laws but, out of respect I would remove the listing per their request. It may take a whole 5 seconds to do so and then everyone will be happy, especially the person requesting the removal. ;)

The simplest answer is that once you have checked they are who they say they are then you remove the entry. Why?

Because its the polite thing to do, and you really should be respecting their decision on such things - if they wanted to make it legal they could have simply had their legal team send you a letter. If they've taken the time to ask politely it's only fair that you comply with their request.

I would say remove the listing. I supose the person involved has their reason to request this and you should oblige by doing so.

In terms of the law I think this falls well within a grey area. I have had users request a listing then threaten legal action to have it removed, then request it be re-listed.

I think you just have to go with their wishes on this one.
