who should I host with?

I was thinking that I wanted to have my own server at home and pay for a dsl line. but i am afraid that a dsl line will be too slow.

then i was thinking well maybe a sdsl line, but this isn't available in my area. so, now i'm thinking maybe i just can't do this. i don't want to spend more than USD $1000.00/year.

any suggestions or comments on having my own server? or a hosting company that will allow max. flexibility at this price?

I'd check out a specific forum where people post about web hosts. I don't have experienced with tons of different hosts, but their prices vary considerably.

My brother-in-law does that. Has one of those little Cobalt something-or-other servers, I think. Seems to work OK, but I'd worry about peak load if you really started serving up some pageviews.

thanks. ya, i think i will have to host elsewhere considering my situation, and maybe dump the cable modem and get a dsl line for surfing and just for server fun. i.e it doesn't matter if it's slow or down. amt. of mb is unknown at this time except lots is good. geez i suddenly feel very very busy. :)

i read a tutorial once on how to keep up with technology, it said, "make sure you allow a half hour per day for focused study." hope i figure out how to be that focused some day!
