302 redirect PHP

I have a number of questions, one of my customers host isnt helping me at all, I am asking them why wont Redirect work and RewriteEngine wont work but there not replying. Ive called emailed, they keep reffereing me to someone else. Because they cant figure out the problem.

Is it legitimate to use PHP that outputs the 302 header, to redirect the url?

And more importantly, will search engines follow this properly?

I hope using php is only temporary, until the host gets back to me.

If I got what you want right, then, to the best of my knowledge, such a redirect is likely to get you banned by most SEs :(
