Cookie Problems with Internet Explorer

If this is the wrong area to post this question or problem, I apologize ahead of time.

Here is my problem:

I have a posting board from Ultimate Bulletin Board. The problem I am having is when people log in to post on the board, they can post one time, then they are logged off, and have to log in again. They get one more post and poof logged off. So to me there is a problem with the cookie set up on the site.

The UBB folks don't think it is a problem on their end. The server folks say it isn't on their end either. Well it has to be somewhere because it is happening, and has been. Noone has an idea of what the solution is.

To add to this dilemma, if you use Netscape browser, you never get logged off, and I mean never, unless you click to log off.

So I need some help, I have no idea what to do about this, but it is slowly killing the amount of posts on the site.

At first I thought it was just me with the problem, but it is all users...

I know I can't name the website here, but if anyone wants to see first hand, I guess you'll have to e-mail me here to get the site URL.

I appreciate any and all help, because I need it!+

Thanks,

FREAK

From what I've heard it looks like it's a cookie setup problem within the settings of the board itself. You've to log in as admin and set them properly. I had a couple of friend who experienced the problem with URB in exactly the same way that you have now. And that's exactly what it took to fix everything on both occasions

I thikn im right in saying you need to check the expiry date of the cookie. If they log out after every post it sounds like the cookie is expiring when the page is closed or you exit a certain page.

As for the problem with NN did you try this for yoursefl or did a user tell you about it?

Probably Internet Explorers default cookie handling settings again...

IE is pathetic. It probably thinks your cookie is a third-party cookie and you need to tell it that it is first party and that it contains no personal data...

How you do that? Don't ask me - I gave up... Long live Netscape (and Opera and...)

Thank you for the replies.....

Stanbo, I have no idea where to look in the control panel to see this, and even if I did find it, I would have no idea what to change and what would be the proper settings..

Mike... I use IE for every other site out there but my own. I use Netscape to access my board and I have never been logged off after posting. So I speak with experience on this. It is really frustrating to say the least.

GSX... no idea myself, everyone has the problem so it isn't person specific like just myself. Rather strange issue indeed.

Welcoming all replies!

You need to test it with IE 5.5 and IE 6. If IE 5.5 accepts, but IE 6 blocks, it thinks your cookies are thirdy party.

You can research P3P if this is the case, but it seems so overly complicated that I gave up.

The browsers are all IE versions. IT varies 5.0 5.5 and 6... I am really thrown for a loop here. Noone knows who's fault it is or why it happens.

Very bizarre stuff....

No other site does this happen, so I am not so sure it is even the browsers fault, but perhaps something with the board itself.

One other thing to add, is that this problem started after switching hosting companies.

Any thoughts on that?

Thank you in advance....

I had the same problem when I was setting up UBB (in particular with the forum administration pages.)

You could try overiding the automatic cookie handling and setting your site that uses UBB to 'always allow' for cookies (which is what I have done with WW.)

Thanks.

Chuma,

Can you drop me a line and further explain. I am at wits end and willing to try anything at this point.

Does anyone think that this problem may be due to the switching of service providers to the forum. I went from one host to another. The server folks that I have now, say it is nothing on their end.

It has to be something!
