hi all,

What do you guy recommend to manage a max 5000 entry directory? Should be around 500 pages

  • building a template driven site
  • or having my own Mysql/asp pages
  • should I use something else than asp?
  • or can you recommend some soft (I've read about one from gossamer, is it any good?)

    Thanks for your help

Gossamer threads is very good for this purpose, a number of quality directories have used this software with great results.

I will agree with Shak, Links SQL by Gassamar Threads is pretty good. :) However along with Links SQL you might also wanna look into IndexU and In-Link.

    Hope this helps :)

A search at hotscripts or similar will net a bunch of link directory tools - some are Yahoo lookalikes, others offer click popularity indicators... it just depends on what features you are looking for. You'll also have your choice of technology - ASP, PHP, etc.

One other thought - as you look at solutions, le_gber, pay attention to the type of link used. Some may offer straight HTML links, others click-tracking links that include the URL which may still register as links in Google, and still others completely obfuscated links. Depending on your objectives for this directory, one type of link may work best.

    IndexU and In-Link.[/quote

I'lllook there as well - thank you :)

I think I'll go for the straigh ones as it'll be the best for optimisation (I think) :)

Ok one smiley for each of you, thank you for your help.

It won't be as big as some directory I've seen - only 10/15 diff categories with 5-10 sub cat in each. I was thinking of using ASP as I don't know PHP (but then again it's never too late to start learning it) coupled with mysql - what do you reckon will work best?

    Thanks
