I just installed a new router Netgear MR814, for the first time. How do I ensure that WEP is turned on? I will be adding a wireless card to my laptop in the near future.

I am not familiar with this particular Router but I think you should be able to activate the WEP encryption from within the web configuration interface.
It seems like WEP is not activated initially according to this article [zdnet.com]
