There are so many hosting companies out there and it seems like there is not a great way to judge them apart. is there a good user review/forum site that isn't full of adverts?

There is a very good forum without ads called webhostingtalk [webhostingtalk.com] where much like here you can learn many things.....:)

yeah, that was one i looked at. I searched for 'oscommerce hosting' and got a bunch of threads that seemed to consist of posts that mainly went like this:
Message 1: I need a host that has A B and C!
Message 2 through a zillion: Use us! We're the best!
Needless to say, not helpful.

Well there are 1,184 threads on 'oscommerce', 202 this month alone, including one on 'osCommerce, is it good?'. If none of these answer your specific query try posting a question.
