Legitimate redirection from one site to another

Hi all,

I've got two domains, let's say, for the purposes of discussion, they are:
abc-widgets.com and abcwidgets.com. I registered both names because I didn't want anyone sneaking in behind me and registering something too close.

My site is located at abc-widgets.com, but I'd like to put a redirect on abcwidgets.com.

Is a redirect adviseable, or will this cause problems with search engines thinking I'm trying to pull a fast one?

What the best way to ensure that anyone who types in abcwidgets.com automatically gets to abc-widgets.com.

Thanks
Michael

dzinerbear,

Welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com]!

Things get a little wild around here when a Google update is in progress...

The best way to accomplish what you want to do is to put a 301-Moved Permanently redirect on your "alternate" domain, and send visitors to your "primary" domain. As long as you do not attempt to actively promote both domains (by getting lots of links to the alternate domain) then this will be considered as completely legitimate; many organizations purchase multiple domains soley for "brand protection."

How you implement the 301 redirect depends on your server type - Apache or IIS, for example. Try a site search (link at top of page) for "301 redirect domain <your server type>" and similar phrases to find more info.
