I just created a glossary for the site's rather specialized content, and the "About us" link sits in the perfect place to put it. ;-)
if the products/services appeal to them then sure they will be interested in who u r.
that's it.
homepage link is ok. About us link will be good.
Actually, what matters is content, persuasive and inspiring content whether u r selling stuff or .org doesnt matter.
Persuasive homepage, inspiring about us and compelling content that does the job.
In my opinion always show the user the next step. what he must do after reading. keep that link it may be any link.
chao!

I usually group these links / buttons seperately from the other critical links such as "Products", or "Services", or "Portfolio". I keep the wording the same, as these are the keywords that people are looking for and have become acustomed to using. We don't want to dazzle them with fancy words for commonly used links.
Also, I usually have a graphical menu (example along left side or along top) AND a text version at bottom. Pretty typical setup - but its proven its self time and time again that some people prefer graphical links, while others are fishing around the bottom of your pages using the text links. Having text versions of your main link sets at the bottom also has an SEO value to it.
I would advise making "about us" a plain menu item, and that's the simple reason why:
Would you prefer the visitor who want to know who is behind the service or product that you offer to:
1) wander back the browser history to the page where he saw it last and possibly never return to the page where he was before, or
2) get the info he wants in one click and proceed filling your order form.
IMHO, the answer should be obvious.
