Norton Antivirus Won't Install - What to do?

Norton says it won't install on a web server, how do I get this virus off?

I discovered a virus on my web server (Win2k), using Symantec's online virus checker.

I bought a license for Norton Internet Security 2003, which includes Antivirus, and downloaded it directly to the web server. But when I tried to install it, Norton said that Antivirus will not run on a server running Windows 2000 web server.

Of course, I tried stopping IIS completely, and that still did not work.

I then tried to upload a copy of Antivirus that I bought for my own laptop, but it too would not install, saying the same thing.

Symantec's website says nothing about Antivirus not being able to run on a web server, and in fact led me to believe that I could do this. Now, they've got my $70.00, and I still have a virus on my server.

What product do I need to get Norton Antivirus installed on my web server, OR, what other antivirus software is better, or, how do I get this darn virus off?

You might need the corporate edition of Norton. Contact them and see what they say - if you upgrade to another one of their packages, they will probably give you your money back on the first.

What kind of virus?

Many cannot be removed manually if you follow the removal instruction, booting to safe mode, etc etc.

One you disabled or crippled the virus from loading on startup, you could then scan the whole drive for and delete traces of it.

Norton usually release a standalone tool to remove viruses. It'll fit on a floppy disk. Search for the name of the virus you have on their site and you will almost certainly find one.
