Getting a charity site index in google...

Can I put a temporary link to him from my site?

Hi,

I have a friend who set this charity up (really good cause too) and they have a small website.

They're in the middle of doing this deal with a major bank that would net them about £20k. They're concerned that a search for "their charity name" in the search engines draws a blank. No incoming links yet....

To kick start them in the google index, can I put one temporary link on my homepage (PR6 and daily visits from freshie) to get him in there? I'd like to help him out, but not if it will get me penalised obviously.

I was thinking of removing the link as soon as he's freshbotted for the first time, just to get him in the index.

I don't see any problem there, I'd also try to get them into Dmoz, but also I think Yahoo list charity sites for free

Yeah, as a charity they get a free listing, but I just want to get them in google fast so they give the right impression to this bank. With the directories you submit and wait about three months....

Thanks for the help, I'll give it a go later and cross my fingers I don't get in trouble for it - shouldn't think so though - it's in a good cause!

TJ,

It's OK to be a bit paranoid in this business, but what conceivable problem do you see with linking to them?

Yahoo 'allegedly' does free listings. However, a free
listing for a NFP at yahoo can take longer than a ODP listing in a competitive commercial cat which has no direct editor tending the cat.

I found ODP much easier to acheive a result for a NFP than Yahoo, even though at yahoo I've never had a server busy message to contend with and at ODP there were times I've thought ODP stood for Off-line Durn-near Perpetually

Mohammed,

Simply the fact that I'm only linking them to get them fresbotted and indexed, then I'll delete the link.

So I guess total irrelevance to my pages, just a scam to get them indexed fast.

I have a largish charity site - and i have used this trick quite a few times in the past to boost new sites...

i can see no problem at all with what you plan to do - after all - you can choose who you want to link to - and if its a charity - all the better...

good luck!

Hell. If you asked around I'm sure a lot of people would put up a temporary link. The key to it is that some of them have to be somewhat related for the search results to really matter.
