Help with colour schemes

Whenever I'm in the initial stages of designing a site I usually start to think about suitable colour schemes to use to reflect the theme/content/mood of the site in question.

However, I often find it difficult to separate what *I* think looks the nicest, and what might actually be the best colours to use. I tend to limit myself (without realising it) to the colours that I personally find visually pleasing.

Anyone have any advice on how I can choose colours that I may not particularly like, but still make an effective look and feel for a site. Should I just be using colour wheel logic to use colours that *should* look good together, or am I trapped in my own colour scheme?

Not the most effectively articulated question, but hope someone understands what I'm driving at ;)

Try the harmonies tool at EasyRGB [easyrgb.com].

You enter one colour and it suggests others that go with it.

Quite useful for the artistically impaired like me. :)

Hehe, there are lots of really nice tools on that site. I've been playing with them for a good hour now.

Not sure i'm actually getting anywhere though ;)
