How Do I Hide/Mask My IP?

A pop-up per minute is too much to ignore.

I am SLAMMED by pop-ups. And not your everyday "cat scratching at the air while a casino pitches their newest partnership with a porn network as a reallybad MIDI plays" pop-up.

I'm talking grey box pop-ups that, no matter how much I use SpyBot and AdAware, won't go away.

It was suggested that I mask my IP.

Anyone know of a good program to do this with? Any other suggestion of how to deal with this?

Hey HyperGeek,

There is a site out there called the-cloak that allows you to surf without displaying your IP address.

What about using Opera or Mozilla and turning pop-ups off?

Hi:

I have used PopUpCop for a while now, and have gotten great results with that...

(No, I do not work there, I promise!)

I tend to agree with BlobFisk,

Blocking pop ups is just one of the rich features I enjoy using Opera as my default browser. Not having to download and install all those patches is another. I use IE mostly for Page Rank checks on competition, with JavaScript disabled.

HyperGeek,

I totally sympathise with you - I am using Win2000, and get grey boxes in the middle of my screen, with the title "Messenger Service", message from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx to myip.myip.myip.myip!

When I check the event viewer in 2000, there it is and alert from "Messenger Service"!

Is this what you are experiencing?

OOps! forgot to mention. Not having to "unistall" all this IE designed scumware is another plus. Thanks wruk999.

My guess is you are running WIndows 2000 or XP direct connect to your ISP (broadband or dialup). If so what you are seeing is people expoiting the windows messager service.

Take a look at How to turn off Windows Messager Service [itc.virginia.edu]

I have seen and shut off a few of these for clients. For even a single computer a simple hardware router is a cheap fireware to keep 'them folk' out of your compuer.

If you are getting stuff from messenger service, it typically means you don't have a firewall. Get some free firewall software from ZoneAlarm and that'll make the messenger service stuff go away.

wruk999,

That is DEAD ON what I'm experiencing. And no pop-up program will stop these bastards.

Agree with the last three posts.

Anyone with a firewall never sees them. I had heard about them, but until I hooked up a computer not to a firewall - I had never seen one until a month ago.

Here is how to turn it off:

[support.microsoft.com...]

And here is a good firewall:

[amazon.com...]

edit: add - oops didn't notice someone else had placed a link - well now you have two

webdevsf,

How about the firewall option in my ADSL connection settings?

I turned it on since it was off, as a quick fix. Should I stick with that or get something else? I'm assuming this M$ XP firewall can be compromised with little effort.
