Hi,

I am thinking about helping a friend improve her website, but for some reason the original company that created the site has it registered to the .gs domain. My best guess is that the design firm registered this domain because it was the only way they could obtain a match to her business name. I do not think my friend is savvy enough to understand this is a country specific extension for "South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands."

There are quite a few links out there that come in to this particular URL. Can anyone advise me about the risks/problems that she may face if she keeps this particular extension? Obviously her business is not part of the "South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands."

Thanks for your help and feedback.

Hi there Suzanne and welcome to WW!

Have you considered a .biz or a similar alternative?
Now, people with a business in the US can register with a .us domain name. Or, if she is in Canada, use a .ca

In the UK, a .co.uk domain name too...

I know it's not always easy to find the best domain that really fits your business name and or main keyword.

I hope this helps

I should consider the .biz extension, I guess I am just curious to find out about the risks involved with keeping the .gs extension. I'll also post this in an SEO forum in case this would result in a lower ranking...

Thanks.
