I am trying to formulate an average downtime figure for large sites such as Amazon, Oracle shop, etc. in order to see if my site is in line or much higher? I know it's probably very low for these larger sites, I was just hoping to try and quantify. Anyone aware of an online reference tool that might have this type of info? Is is usually reported in annual stock reports? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

smassa... I was hoping somebody would be able to answer this, as I was curious myself.

On the surface, though, most of the BIG guys have hundreds, if not thousands of servers that balance the load between them. If there are a few dozen servers that are down at any one time - in most cases - the visitor wouldn't notice, because they would automatically be switched to a working server.

So to compare the big guys, to somebody like myself with only 2 dedicated servers, my downtime is going to be more than the 'big' guys, and those with virtual servers are probably down a little longer, since there are dozens of different customers on the same server that could cause more frequent outages.

Hopefully somebody here has some actual statistics.

Steve,
I have been all over the net looking for these stats,if I come up with anything I'll forward. I am starting to wonder if this is a figure that is released?

We run our site off of about 10 servers and will take one out of service from time to time if one is having problems, but the site marches on without problems.

At least for our site, the only unscheduled downtime we have is if our production DB crashes and needs to be rebooted. This process takes about 5-10 minutes, and happens rarely.

We also schedule downtime for major releases and firewall maintenance, and can have our site behind a "We are upgrading our site" page for a couple hours if it is a big release. This happens in the middle of the night when traffic would be minimal anyway.
