Hi,

I was thinking of moving to a new host. It started up in Germany 10 years ago and they started up in the UK about 2 years ago. They have won best webhost from a well-known UK magazine two years in a row. UK customers can call a customer support centre in the UK, we are charged in pounds, they have a .co.uk site and everything looks really professional. I've rung their sales line (based in the UK and called on a UK line) and asked a few questions - they seemed nice enough. They have also listed a UK fax and postal address on their site.

The only problem I've got with them is that their servers are in Germany. I know that access speeds for UK visitors to my site might be a little slower in theory, but is all of this really a problem, or should foreign hosts really be avoided at all costs?

i don't think they should be avoided, i live in spain, and use both spanish branches of international hosts and hosts located in the us. The difference in speeds is negligible, remember your visitors may be from the same country as your your servers!
Why don't you ask them that question straight up, and if they have a forum ask there for other clients to answer, and if the have a portfolio of clients email one of them!

I would recommend local hosting. Servers and probably nameservers should be in the country you are targeting.

Server location has become a major factor with search engines, namely Google. If for example you have a .com, plus hosting in Germany, you won't be in Google's british results, ragrdless if you pay taxes there, have a brick&mortar or whatever.

Local hosting, the safer bet for long termn success.

I'm based in London, and use a US-based host for a London-based organisation. It has never bothered me. I've had to use their technical support before, and I've simply had conversations using email, no problem.

Access speeds have never been a problem with them either. On the other hand, I have issues on that score with my UK-based ISP.
