Looking for a good Bulletin Board System

Can anyone point me in the direction of some good customizable BB systems?

As mentioned I don't know php and MySQL, but I would like a semi-decent solution.

This is for a pro-bono site so I don't want to have to spend hours on end on administration or setup either.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If your host has PHP & MySQL, it basically takes zero knowledge of same to install and use phpBB:

I have not used it, but I know someone who does, and he likes it. And it is free!

I use GT Forum, found here: [gossamer-threads.com...]

and I have been pretty happy with it. Not PHP, but MySQL. All you need to know about MySQL is the path and password to your server.

I use WebBBS (http://awsd.com/scripts/webbbs/) and am prety happy with it. It's open source shareware, written in Perl.

And I love www.YaBBforum.com. It is in perl with a MySql and non-SQL ("Gold SP 1") version. I use the non-SQL version, and it works fine. I understand the SQL version is faster and leaner, which is important if there are lots of users, but for what I use, it's no problem. I'm no programmer, but I have a bit of experience setting up perl scripts. Set up was not difficult at all.

You could try MiniBB [minibb.net] which is very small by size, fast, free and quite easy to set up (you will still need php and MySql, but no special knowledge will be required).
Since the perfect BBS probably doesn't exist (and WebmasterWorld will not make its own available...) I guess it pays to use what is easy to customize and light in size, unless you really have very specific needs.

I use invisionboard. The set up is nearly plug an play. if you can chmod your files and folders, your all the way there. Gonna try setting up a phpbb next week just to try it, so I'll let ya know how that goes if I think of it, but it sounds super simple.

I researched the Forum s/w market for a client about 5 months ago and the one I eventually selected has been superb for his (and my) particular requirements - minimum admin, customizable, very fast and good professional support. It is called ASPPlayground [aspplayground.net] and regular new releases are functionally user driven and we have never had a problem.
