Most TFT screens have their own native resolution and are optimised for that - normally around 1024x768. It's easier to go higher resolution-wise if you want to cram heaps of stuff onto your desktop, but if you're running a smaller resolution than that then the image will appear blocky - particularly the fonts. Check what res you're running and change it if that appears to be the problem.
Good luck,

The only thing that's really left that I can think of (assuming it's not actually a faulty monitor), is to either make sure that you have the correct drivers installed (although all this really does is to enforce the correct res and refresh rate), or to try another graphics card if you have a spare one around.

If you're all set up and running in the monitor's native resoltion, I'm afraid that what you are seeing is just the nature of TFT displays. You are indeed seeing each individual pixel. About the only thing that can help is to move the monitor further away. But if after doing that, you still can't stand it, trade it in on either a huge CRT-based monitor or a bigger TFT monitor (that you can move even further away).
Some brands are a little better than others, but they all have visibly-obvious pixels.

I wonder if they showed you both photos and text "in the shop." Or changed the contrast... Tricky salemen, you know.
Let me know the right ascension and declination of its new location. If I happen to process that SETI.org work unit and it sends me any interesting signals, I'll let you know. :)
