Gateway Timeout
The following error occurred:
A gateway timeout occurred. The server is unreachable.
Does the above mean my host is down?
I'm in the uk and my host is in the US
can someone try it out for me please?
www.nhhosting.net
I havnt been able to access them, or send them email keep getting server timed out etc.
Is it my connection or are they down? right in the middle of the dance

works - so no need for anyone else to goto the site ;) You got the one hit from me. Id restart your computer if the problem exists. if its a new domain give it time maybe your name servers dont have the changes aknowledged, these nameservers would be those of your ISP.

ive tried restarting, but nothing.
i can access any other site on the www but not mine, and not my hosts. why would that be?
by the way nhhosting is my host, not my website! i'm not here for a few poxy hits.
thanks for testing it anyway.

What OS are you using, and have you installed anything recently. When you try to ping the hostname what happens. In windows goto the start menu click run and type:

cmd

A window will popup and type ping hostname.com
What happens, if you see something like:

nicolas@staticusers:~$ ping domainname.com
PING xxxxxxxx: 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 66.222.xxx.x: icmp_seq=0 ttl=242 time=44.3 ms
64 bytes from 66.222.xxx.x: icmp_seq=1 ttl=242 time=45.6 ms

Then you can resolve the IP. Also try:
nslookup hostname.com

see where it goes and stops and if it reaches the final destination.

hi again. i tried what you said and got this when pinging mydomain. i dont understand it but i expect you do! by the way, we tried accessing my domain and my host on our other PC but still nothing. by the way i changed the ip to 0's

Pinging mydomain.com [0.0.0.0] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 0.0.0.0: bytes=32 time=220ms TTL=243
Reply from 0.0.0.0: bytes=32 time=211ms TTL=243
Reply from 0.0.0.0: bytes=32 time=200ms TTL=243
Reply from 0.0.0.0: bytes=32 time=200ms TTL=243

Ping statistics for 0.0.0.0:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 200ms, Maximum = 220ms, Average = 207ms

are you in the uk?

Im nationwide :) Try the nslookup one now, I wanna see if its an issue with YOUR network connection. It could be ISP routing issues also. Wanna see for sure your site is online and its something with you or your isp or something in between goto AV.com and click on translate then put in the website address in the bar, choose a language and bablefish will connect to the site and translate the data ;)

Try this, change your dns servers to 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 and see if the site loads, if it does then its something with your isp's dns server stuff.

You using dialup or cable modem, what version of windows? In short this is how to do it:

Goto Control Panels
Click Network Connections
Right Click the Local Area Network properties, or if your on dialup right click that connection. You will see something in there that says Internet Protocol TCP/IP and click on properties for it.

You will see something that says Obtain DNS server address automaticly and one that use use the following DNS, this is where you enter the two IP addresses I supplied.

Sure you have not tweaked something in IE or Zone alarm or your security controls?

If you are in the UK using BT (including their millions of partners - such as Freeserve) or AOL, you will find that they cache certain data and it gets updated every couple of days or so. This means that if your host changes the NameServer data for your site, any BT or AOL customer will not be able to access your site. Try signing up with Virgin on their 0845 number dial-up and try it that way. I have had that same problem before.

i did what you said and changed the 2 ip's
My site loads up! :)
so anyone using freeserve (my isp)connection cant access my site then?
Is this a common problem?
I'm thinking of changing to a UK host anyway because most my visitors are from the UK and i think it will be quicker page loads and quicker when i'm uploading etc.
Hey thanks for all your help. its really appreciated. I thought something terrible had happened to my host and although i have backup of my site, i dont have full backup, like my cgi scripts etc

Your webhost is fine, other people can access it, its your computer, or your ISP's connection or the connection between the two. Call up your ISP in the morning or when they are open and ask why you can not connect to the site but other people around the world can and when you changed your NS servers from theirs to some other ISP's it works ;) It could also be that something on your computer caused it to mess something up but who knows. Like was mentioned if something changed recently with the web site such as name servers or IP addresses it could be cached. :) Glad it worked for you. In a few days try changing it back to the automatic choice in the configuration to see if it works, if not you can put it back to the ones mentioned.

why would my host change the nameserver data for my site? I cant afford for this to keep happening! I provide alot of accommodation with online booking, and i expect alot of my customers are on BT/Freeserve etc as most customers are from the UK.
How can i make sure this never happens again? Change to a UK host?

no no no im not saying they did. im saying it could be a possibility but more likely its just your internet service provider and your computer having troubles connecting to the site, it could just be your computer. But now your able to connect like me and everyone else. Id bet it was your computer, but if you want to be certain your isp's users are able to connect to it call up tech support and explain the situation :) no need to pull plugs and change hosts! ... Your welcome :D
