A window will popup and type ping hostname.com
What happens, if you see something like:
nicolas@staticusers:~$ ping domainname.com
PING xxxxxxxx: 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 66.222.xxx.x: icmp_seq=0 ttl=242 time=44.3 ms
64 bytes from 66.222.xxx.x: icmp_seq=1 ttl=242 time=45.6 ms
Then you can resolve the IP. Also try:
nslookup hostname.com
see where it goes and stops and if it reaches the final destination.
Pinging mydomain.com [0.0.0.0] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 0.0.0.0: bytes=32 time=220ms TTL=243
Reply from 0.0.0.0: bytes=32 time=211ms TTL=243
Reply from 0.0.0.0: bytes=32 time=200ms TTL=243
Reply from 0.0.0.0: bytes=32 time=200ms TTL=243
Ping statistics for 0.0.0.0:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

what does that tell us?

Goto Control Panels
Click Network Connections
Right Click the Local Area Network properties, or if your on dialup right click that connection. You will see something in there that says Internet Protocol TCP/IP and click on properties for it.
You will see something that says Obtain DNS server address automaticly and one that use use the following DNS, this is where you enter the two IP addresses I supplied.
