I'm wanting to create a website that (hopefully) generates enough income to cover the server costs (yes, I'm not very ambitious right now).

Before I spend the next 2/3 months working my head off on some madcap campaign, I'd like to know if anyone has any ideas what kind of websites will appeal to surfers. A list of top websites would help... something professional (ie: google's ranking for top websites, or excite's... anything but those top 100 sites that pop up everytime you click on a link).

Lastly, should I be bothered about things like CSS, browser differences, etc.? I understand that earlier browsers have very different notions of how websites should be displayed as compared to more recent flavours. Should I use CGI to filter out the cranky browsers and present a slightly different website to them or should I just stick to conservative HTML that displays more or less the same across the board, since I am debating whether to use layers or tables for object positioning... and I understand that layers is not really very well supported in old browers?

To find the top sites, Alexa provides a reasonable list, albeit skewed by the countries that use its toolbar more (mainly Korea). If you search in Google for http:// then you get a list that is probably in close to PageRank order. Hope that helps.
