Confirm if it is hardware or software by booting to DOS and typing up something and see if you get the same repeating e's.
Hit other keys on the keyboard to stop the e's. May take some experimenting to find the right key(s). The keyboard is actually a matrix of switches connected in rows and columns.
Plugging in an external keyboard. I still used the laptop's keyboard, the external just made the machine happier. I did carry a full size keyboard with the laptop to a few client meetings.
Take the laptop apart and put it back together. This can help with connections and parts that have wiggled loose over time. Also check for 'foreign' objects - I had to clean out the metal chips after doing some equipment work in a machine shop. Before taking it apart check to see if it still has any warranty left.
My last step was to replace it. But the fiddling did extend the more than a 1/2 year.
Good Luck
